Acclaimed artist Yayoi Kusama has died. She held her paintbrushes until right before she died. She suffered hallucinations as a young child. Kusama turned those childhood hallucinations into vibrant artwork. Polka dots served as her main motif. They were featured in her many paintings and art pieces.

Kusama received the Praemium Imperiale award for her contributions in art. Her work gained global fame. One creation, the Red Pumpkin artwork, grew into an icon of Naoshima island. She kept working until she passed away. She created art inspired by her early childhood experiences and her signature polka dots.
